Matheson Hammock Park is located at 9610 Old Cutler Road in Coral Gables—easy to access, free parking, and only a $7 entrance fee per car. It’s far enough from downtown to feel peaceful but close enough that you’re not traveling hours for photos.

• A pristine lagoon (my personal favorite for sunrise sessions)

Matheson Hammock Park Engagement Session Timing: When to Schedule

Best Seasons: November – April

This is when you want to schedule your Matheson Hammock Park engagement session.

Why avoid summer (June-October):

• Oppressive heat and humidity make outdoor sessions uncomfortable
• Daily afternoon thunderstorms disrupt shooting
• Mosquitoes become aggressive
• You and your partner will be exhausted from the heat rather than enjoying the experience

Winter and spring weather is comfortable, the light is gorgeous, and you can actually enjoy the park instead of just surviving it.

Weekday vs. Weekend:

Schedule your session on a weekday whenever possible. Weekends at Matheson Hammock Park get busy with families, joggers, and casual visitors. A weekday session means:

• Fewer people in your background
• More privacy for intimate moments
• Better access to all the park’s best spots
• A more relaxed, unhurried pace

Sunrise Sessions: The Best Kept Secret

Sunrise sessions at Matheson Hammock Park are truly special. The park opens at sunrise, and early morning is when it’s most peaceful.

Why sunrise works:

• The lagoon is empty, no kids running around
• You have the entire park basically to yourself
• Lower temperature means you’re comfortable during the session
• Fewer mosquitoes in the early morning

Yes, early mornings require an earlier wake-up, but the light and peace you get make it worth it.

Photography Permit Required:

Park Entrance Fee:

There’s a $7 entrance fee per vehicle—reasonable and easy to pay at the park entrance.

Parking:

Parking is free once you’ve paid the entrance fee. The lot is spacious and easy to access. If the main lot is full (which is rare on weekdays), overflow parking is available across the street.

What to Wear for Your Engagement Session

The Basics:

Wear whatever makes you feel confident and comfortable. This is an outdoor park session, so keep practical considerations in mind.

Footwear:

Wear flats or wedges, not heels. The park has natural terrain—grass, uneven ground, and sandy areas near the water. Heels sink, get stuck, and make walking uncomfortable. Flat sandals, sneakers, or going barefoot (especially near the water) all work beautifully.

Outfit Changes:

The park has clean bathrooms, so changing outfits is easy. Many couples do a casual look for the first half and something more formal for the second half. With 90 minutes, you have plenty of time to change without rushing.

Can You Include Your Dog in Your Engagement Session?

If you’re my client, dogs are absolutely welcome! They add personality and joy to engagement photos.

Park Rules:

• Dogs must be on a leash
• You must pick up after them
• The park is dog-friendly

If you’re bringing your dog, consider bringing a dog sitter along. Here’s why: Your dog will need attention, treats, breaks, and management while your photographer is trying to capture photos of you two. A sitter gives your pup care and lets you focus on your session without distraction.

Alternatively, some couples do a portion of the session with the dog and then do some photos without—best of both worlds.
